Introduction

EPILA, a laser hair eliminator, is a medical instrument, manufactured on the basis of the scientific researches and up-to-date technologies.
808nm wavelength being used worldwide for hair removal has been proved to be an average of 80% effective for permanent hair removal by world leading research institutes and universities. Even if the laser is not emitted directly on hair, it also has a hair removal effect by emitting onto the root of hair through the skin because 808nm wavelength penetrates deep into the root of hair.

About Laser

The name LASER is an acronym for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Many people have a tendency to think that lasers have an all-round capability to treat all of things, but in fact, lasers are merely applied to surgical operations and skin diseases by using an appropriate wavelength, emission method of the light. Laser also has a unique wavelength and a single color attribute, which contributes to the hair removal treatment. Although the light emitted from the sun consists of different wavelengths of lights, laser is a light which has only one wavelength. In other words, lasers have a characteristic, which respond to only one color.

Laser & Hair

When laser is absorbed by skin tissue, it generates thermal injuries on skin tissue by transforming into heat energy. Thermal injuries of skin tissue dissolve the tissue on degrees over 100 and cause scars arisen from irreversible degeneration on degrees between 50 and 100. Reversible regeneration is generated under 50 degrees, and this make the skin tissue possible to be restored to normal condition. The degree of thermal injuries are determined by wavelength of the laser, intensity of light, the time emitted, absorbing material and characteristics, etc. When applied to surgical operations lasers can treat a variety of skin diseases without causing any side effects. The laser used for hair removal destroys the root of hair by emission on hair or surroundings after being absorbed into pigment. The principal of laser hair removal is that the light energy emitted by a specific wavelength of laser which is selectively absorbed by the melanin pigment located in hair follicles, destroys the root of hair by transforming into thermal energy.

Features
  • High-power semiconductor laser causing no side effect and easy to use.
  • Includes several safe equipments assuring safe and easy uses at home.
  • The laser is emitted only within the scope of short distance by executing the emission in the process of concentrating the laser light with optical lens to prevent from doing any harm to the people.
  • Adjustable timer of laser emission and power controller of laser.
  • Slim and portable design easy to carry along in case of a travel or business trip.
  • If dark, the hair in almost any part of the body can be treated such as arm, leg, brow, bikini line, beard, etc. It is, however, principal not to have treatment on near the nipples and perineal region that have much pigment precipitation. When you have treatment on the facial region, give much attention in order not to expose the eyes to the laser.
  • Almost any part of the body can be treated such as eyebrow, armpit and bikini line of woman and beard of man. Your unwanted hairs can be safely removed from any part of your body in the shortest possible time imaginable.
For better effective treatment
  1. The shorter and coarser the hair, the better the treatment result in that the long hair prevents the laser from easily transmitting into the root of hair.
  2. Shave the area up to nearly clean with 1~2 mm of hair left to have best results. This procedure will facilitate adequate destruction of the root of the hair follicles by the laser. Electric hair removal cannot pull the hair out if not grown, on the contrary, grown hair is an obstacle for laser hair removal. Following or one day prior to your treatment, remove the hair with a shaver. But don’t pull the hair out because laser is not effective on an area where the hair is pulled out.
  3. Let the heat of your skin cool down with an ice pack before and after the treatment. The laser generates a lot of heat on your skin during use. If you have no ice pack, substitutes such as cool towel can be used.
  4. You can have a treatment by letting the laser emit directly on your hair. Even if the laser is emitted into the root of hair through the skin, it also penetrates deep into the root of hair and destroys it.
  5. Aim the laser as closely as possible as if you were drawing a circle at your skin not at the end of hair.
  6. Treatment of regions hard to aim, such as armpits, have help or use it as if you were drawing a picture of the number eight slowly.
  7. During treatment there is some pain. It is described as a 'snap' or a “mild stinging” associated with the high temperatures of the laser. This means the root of hair is successfully destroyed. If you feel the snap, repeat at other regions.
  8. If there are burned hairs left, pull them out with tweezers.
  9. Two or three times of sensation of stinging on each hair at a treatment is suitable. Apply the laser at skin pores in turns: Laser treatment at a skin pore in succession is not good.
Questions and Answers about Laser Hair Removal

1. What are the principals of laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal works by sending a beam of laser light to a group of hair follicles with enough power to disable or destroy the root, but not enough power to harm the surrounding skin. The process is called selective photothermolysis. It is a selective procedure because it targets only the hair and not the skin. In the past lasers were mainly utilized for the treatment of discolorations and freckles but later it was found that lasers were also an effective means for hair removal.

2. What areas can be treated?

The most common areas are the face, underarms, legs, chest, and back. Most patients have treatment of more sensitive areas like the nipples, bikini line, and intimate areas. Almost any part of the body can be treated such as eyebrow, armpit and bikini lines of women and the beards of men.

3. How many treatments are necessary?

You may require several treatments for optimal long-term benefits. The result can be different depending on the area you with to have treated. Factors such as hair density and your hairs growth cycle and color are important factors.  Darker hair responds to laser therapy faster, but both dark and light hair may need up to five treatments for maximum response and best long-term results.

4. What are the Cautions after the treatment?

There are no special things to be cautious about.  But to avoid exposure to excessive sunlight and to keep the area clean to prevent any infection.

5. What about Side effects?

Slight reddening and local swelling of the skin, similar to sunburn may occur in some patients.  These side effects typically last 3-4 days or less.

6. Can it be used for sensitive skin?

The laser reacts only to hairs, which are darker than the skin.  This is so it doesn't damage normal skin color.  If your skin is tanned you should wait until the tan is gone before treating the area.

7. Can I use it on the same region for a long time?

Avoid excessive treatment on the same region at a time.  The excessive hair removal may cause excessive reddening or swelling of your skin. Repeat 2-3 times as you feel 2-3 times of sensation of stinging inside of pores.  If your skin is reddened, cool your skin down with an ice pack or wet towel.

8. What does it feel like?

You will get lots of different answers to this question.  But the fact remains that when the laser is emitted into the skin there is some pain associated with the high temperatures of the laser.  Some patients describe the sensation as a snap of a mild stinging that lasts for less than a second.

9. How many treatments have to be treated at a time?

If laser is emitted precisely into the pores, there is a sensation of stinging. If it is like this repeat on that area 2-3 times. Don’t apply the laser at the same skin pore in succession.  Place the laser at different skin pores in turns.

IF NOT EFFECTIVE PLEASE CHECK THE FOLLOWING REASONS BELOW.
1) There is no sensation of stinging inside skin pores. (Adjust the level to a high point and increase the laser emission).
2) The hair on the surface is too long. (Long hair prevents the laser energy from being absorbed by skin pores. Shave the area up nearly clean with 1-2mm of hair left to have best results)
3) Only one cycle of the emission was treated on the area. (With treatments of a region where hair must be eliminated, repeat 2-3 times of the procedure so that you feel a sensation of stinging inside of skin pores

The Hair Cycle

For permanent hair removal, the hair in a state of active growth phase of its cycle called anagen has to be eliminated. The hair cycle in human hair grows in an asynchronous manner, un-like animal hair which falls our synchronously in the form of a molt. Each human hair has a characteristic cycle of its own. The hair cycle consists of three periods, growing period (about three years) called anagen, resting period (about 2-3 weeks) called Catagen, and shedding period (about 3 months) called Talogen. About 90% of hairs on our head are normally in the growing period, about 1% are in the resting period, and 10-15% are in the shedding period.  Animals have the same sort of hair cycle but it is synchronized so all of their hair falls out at the same time. The human cycle, on the other hand is asynchoronized.

Antagen

About 90% of hairs on our head are normally in the growing phase. The other 10% will soon fall out. Hair follicles are deeply buried in the subcutaneous fat at core temperature. The final length of this activity is specific to any one individual. Growing hair is always well supplied by blood circulation.

Categen.

The cessation of the anagen phase is characterized by a transitory phase known as categen. The growing cells in the follicle stop and it shrinks rapidly. The hair does not grow and starts to move closer to the epidermis and takes the form of a club. This phase lasts for about 2-3 weeks. Only around 1% of hair follicles are in this stage at any one time.

Talogen

Following the categen phase the hair enters the talogen “Resting” phase. The hair can now be considered dead and will fall out, it gets smaller and lighter and moves further toward the epidermis, the new hair growing underneath it pushes it out. Eventually each hair will be lost or shed at the end of its cycle. Hairs are mostly (and naturally) shed when we wash or comb/brush our hair. We lose between 30-100 hairs each day quite naturally.  As the hair is lost a new cycle of hair growth in that same follicle has already begun. In normal subjects talogen hair is retained within the scalp for up to 12 weeks before the emerging new hair dislodges it from its follicle.

10. What to do when you think a machine defect has occurred?

Make sure the unit is properly plugged in.
Make sure the key is switched clockwise.
Make sure you have pushed the laser emission button.
Check if you have correctly set the level and pushed the START button.
If you skin is too dry the laser cannot be emitted. Place an ice pack or a wet towel several times on the area.

11. What if the laser has a sound?

This is a normal phenomenon generated from laser operation.

12. What if the main body and the wand are too hot?

During the summer and long periods of use you may feel that the unit is getting hot. It’s just a filtering process by a heat filter inside the instrument.  Turn the machine off and let the unit cool down.

How to store out of use

KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDERN
Unplug the unit from any power outlets.
Do not keep the unit in an area of 40 degrees Celsius
Regularly clean the lens to keep the beam output strong.
